SwitchBox6: smart controls without a screen

Six ordinary toggle switches form a wireless remote control for functions around the home. There is no app to open or dashboard to search: flip a switch and it responds.

Why physical switches?

Home Assistant enables plenty of automation, but not every action needs to go through a phone or touchscreen. For frequently used functions, a physical switch remains fast, clear and pleasant to use.

SwitchBox6 brings six of those controls together in one compact enclosure. The switches feel familiar while ESPHome and Home Assistant process the commands behind the scenes.

Six switches, different functions

SwitchesFunction
2 × on–off–onIndividual control of the two blinds in the home office
4 × on–offControl of lighting and switching a digital radio on or off

SwitchBox6 makes smart controls tangible again. The technology stays in the background; on the outside there are simply six switches that do what you expect.

From switch to Home Assistant

Inside is a Seeed Studio XIAO ESP32-C6 running ESPHome firmware. A change to a switch is sent wirelessly and linked to the appropriate function in Home Assistant.

This keeps the control box simple while allowing the final action to change freely. The physical control and its logic do not have to be fixed inside the same device.

An enclosure for everyday use

The compact enclosure was designed and 3D printed from scratch. It retains the rounded shape of the prototype. Six metal switches are clearly arranged across the top, with a central screw that allows the box to be opened.

The medium-grey finish emphasises the shape and metal switches and fits with the other Atelier images.

A prototype that keeps evolving

SwitchBox6 connects physical controls with Home Assistant. It also remains a prototype: the firmware and power management are being refined further to process the switches efficiently and reliably.

The established enclosure shape will remain. Further development is taking place mainly on the inside.

What makes this project interesting

  • Six tactile controls replace multiple actions in apps and dashboards.
  • One box combines blinds, lighting and radio without requiring those devices to form one technical system.
  • ESPHome translates simple switch positions into flexible actions in Home Assistant.
  • The 3D-printed enclosure turns electronics and controls into one practical object.
  • The functions can change later in Home Assistant without redesigning the entire box.
