Five blinds, five independent controllers

Five windows arranged in a curve, each with its own motorised blind. What began as one controller grew into five separate ESPHome devices that come together in Home Assistant.

Five separately controlled blinds across a curved row of windows

From one window to five

The windows sit next to one another in a slight curve, but each blind is technically a separate system. Every window has its own 28BYJ-48 stepper motor, ULN2003 motor driver, Seeed Studio XIAO ESP32-C6 and ESPHome firmware. Each blind also has a clear individual name in Home Assistant.

This setup keeps the installation easy to understand. One controller can be adjusted or maintained separately without treating the other four as part of one large device.

One tidy power line

Power runs from one blind to the next. The cables are concealed behind the blinds in trunking, supplying all five independent controllers without five separate visible cable routes.

The electronics remain independent at each window; only the power line is conveniently daisy-chained.

ESPHome and Home Assistant

Each ESP32 runs its own ESPHome configuration and appears as a separate device in Home Assistant. This allows individual control while leaving room to include the blinds in shared automations or scenes later.

The current controllers use a XIAO ESP32-C6 and replace an earlier ESP32-C3 version. The firmware remains identifiable for each blind and can be updated wirelessly.

An adapted enclosure

The enclosure was developed from the 28BYJ Roller Blind model by TJ1 on MakerWorld. That model page in turn credits nidayand as the creator of the original design.

The existing design provided the starting point; the enclosure was adapted for this installation and the chosen electronics. The detail image is a conceptual illustration, not an exact wiring diagram or a dimensionally accurate technical drawing.

What makes this project interesting

  • One practical design is used five times while every device remains independent.
  • Mechanics, electronics, firmware and home automation meet inside a small enclosure.
  • The daisy-chained power and cable trunking keep the installation visually tidy.
  • Individual names make control and maintenance clear in Home Assistant.
  • The move from ESP32-C3 to ESP32-C6 shows how the project has evolved.
